Celestia is a participatory public art installation by Kleis, launched through the Canadian Commission for UNESCO's Creative Cities Network. Seven interactive light structures, inspired by the seven sisters of the Pleiades, come alive with light, sound, and poetry as people move through them. Portable and modular, the piece is designed to travel, turning each new location into its own immersive experience.
Celestia needed a North American source of recycled plastic, and we supplied our White Stone sheets, made from recycled food-service trays and license plate holders, for the flat top surface of each module. Watching a thousand pounds of plastic waste become an interactive work about shared public space makes the material part of the art, not a backdrop to it.
